The floating apparatus is used for rescuing a drowning person, the rescuer being towed by the apparatus and wearing a harness for towing the drowning person. It comprises a housing (1) containing a propeller (3) driven by a self-contained power unit (2). In front of the propeller is a large diameter tube (4) held in the housing by radially mounted ribs (9, 10). The front of the tube has a perforated plate (7, 8), the flow of water (6) over the propeller passing down the tube. This generates a depression in flexible tubing (5) entering (13) the side of the tube, this tubing forming a probe for the patient's windpipe.
