Hydropneumatic ram for machine tool vice - multiplies force using two prim, pneumatic rams operating sec hydraulic ram

The hydropneumatic ram may be incorporated on a vice and may be used to secure a workpiece to a machine-tool. The unit has two or more parallel pistons which are displaced pneumatically giving rise to increased hydraulic pressure on a sec. piston. The sec. piston displaces the jaw of the vice. The prim. pistons travel in similar cylinders which are fixed together by a central hollow cylindrical tie between a capping plate and a head block. The sec. cylinder may be located between the prim. cylinders and the tie also serves to distribute compressed air to the fore and aft of the prim. pistons.
