A tool (15) of the same cross section as the inter-tooth space is used to sharpen the teeth of a band saw. The tool, applies a transverse clamping action to the blade, maintaining the effect as the tool advances tooth by tooth. The tool may also be equipped with mechanisms relaxing the grip and effecting incremental advance, the increment corresponding to the teeth interval. Advance may be effected by an oscillating push-rod cooperating with the notches on the back edge of the blade, or by a mechanism with a pincer action. The spacer on the back of the blade may be at the same pitch (P) as those between the teeth.
