Detecting formaldehyde in soln. using iodo-mercurate ions - esp. for use in rinsing formalin sterilised medical appts.

The process comprises adding to the liq. a soln. contg. HgI4-- ions and observing the colour change in the presence of formaldehyde. Further embodiments comprise using (a) an alkaline soln. of iodomercurate; (b) an alkaline soln. contg. a mixt. of HgCl2 and KI, and (c) Nesslers reagent. The process is used to detect formaldehyde in appts. which has been sterilised with formal and then rinsed with water. A sample of the final washing water will turn orange yellow when tested as above. The method is part. used for detecting formal in medical appts. It is simple, easy to operate and has a good sensitivity.
