Recovery of energy contd. in a fluid e.g. water at high enthalpy level (P,t) incorporating (a) expanding the fluid to a pressure below atmos. pressures (b) introducing it into an enclosure and (c) passing through a two-phase nozzle where the fluid is partly vaporised and accelerated to form a high speed jet. The kinetic energy contained in this jet is transformed into work on the axis of a turbine. The vapour produced in the expansion of the hot fluid is condensed by cold fluid taken from outside the enclosure, to maintain the press. Po in the enclosure. The liq. which accumulates in the enclosure is taken out by a pump using a part of the mechanical work supplied by the turbine and raising the press. of the fluid to discharge the enclosure. Process is applicable partic. in the case of isolated installations where an external source of hot water is available. In nuclear power stations, the process can be used to supply water at ambient temp. to the safety circuit of the nuclear reactor.
