Eugenate compsn. for dental applications comprises (a) a liq. component comprising 100% eugenol (I) and (b) a powder component comprising 92-97%, esp. 96% ZnO and 3-8%, esp. 5% zinc acetate (II). In another embodiment, the compsn. comprises (a) a liq. component consisting of 92-97%, esp. 95% (I) and 4-8%, esp. 5% ortho-ethoxybenzoic acid (III), and a powder component consisting of 80-90%, esp. 85-86% ZnO, 7-12%, esp. 9-10% anhydrous Al2O3 and 3-12%, esp. 4-12% (II). The compsns. are two-pack cavity lining cements for use in lining drilled tooth cavities prior to inserting the main filling. The cements have a much more rapid setting time than previous eugenate cements, relatively low cost, good physical properties including high compressive strength, good heat and chemical resistance, and some germicidal activity.
