Earthworks side slopes (9) are substituted for by a retaining wall for carriageway (1) widening under an existing bridge (2) with skeleton abutments (4,5,6) set back on the top of the cutting line and with no pier at the foot of the side slope (9). Initially a line of piles (11) is driven behind an abutment (5), providing lateral support for the material (8) under the road, and enabling the excavation to be taken with safety. The new wall (10) may be of in situ reinforced concrete with the back face cast against the sides of the excavation. 1&2.
