Process for the preparation of 1-R2R2N-CO 3-(3,5-dichloro phenyl)-hydantoin derivs. of formula (I) (where R1 is 1-4C alkyl or phenyl and R2 is H or 1-4C alkyl) by (1) reaction of phosgene with 3-(3,5-dichlorophenyl)-hydantoin (III), in an inert organic solvent, in the presence of an acid acceptor, to yield the novel 1-chloro-carbonyl-3-(3,5-dichlorophenyl) hydantoin, (II), and (2) reaction of (II) with a prim. or sec. amine, R1R2NH, in an inert organic solvent, in the presence of an acid acceptor. Cpds. (I) are known cpds. e.g. 1-isopropylcarbamoyl-3-(3, 5-dichloro- phenyl)-hydantoin, Cpd.A is an agricultural fungicide (see FR2120222). The present process gives a more economic production process.
