A block (2) with parallel sides has an overhanging support (4) at one end (6). This allows the block to be fixed to a fixed chassis. On the opposite end to the support is located a reception area (12) for an applied force (F) being measured. The block has two transverse parallel holes located side by side in the horizontal plane and which are connected by a slot (20). This allows the block to deform as a force is applied. The force is measured by strain gauges (22,24) positioned on the upper and lower faces of the block over the holes. These are protected by a sealed bellows (50) fixed to carriers (47) at the ends of the block. A cable (52), connected to the gauges, is sealed as it passes through the block.
