The washer comprises a frame (7) which supports a movable panel (9) which is pivoted about a horizontal axis (10). This pivot axis is positioned across the lower half of the panel so that the two thirds of the panel is above it and one third is below it. The pivoting of the panel is limited by a stop (13) which is a horizontal bar carried in one of a set of notches (14) which are spaced apart vertically. The panel is positioned across the exit channel of the pond complex and by pivoting it suddenly, the water at the top and bottom of the ponds flows outwards rapidly, entraining the debris which was at the bottom.
