Potter-bucky grid for diagnostic radiography - is located on leaf springs permitting its oscillation, with peg on grid controlling amplitude of oscillation
The grid is oscillated during examination of a patient, and prevents scattered X-rays from reaching a film or image intensifier. The grid consists of a row of Pb strips in a thin plate (a) which is located by leaf springs in an outer frame (b). The leaf springs permit plate (a) to oscillate. Plate (a) is provided with a small peg located in a groove in frame (b). The groove contains a stationary cam with the shape of a narrow parallelogram. Oscillation causes the peg to travel in a closed path round the cam, thereby controlling the amplitude and direction of oscillation. An electromagnet previously used to clamp the grid is now eliminated.
