The vehicle follows a set route, passing a number of stations at which it stops, and has a pulse counter which determines the distance covered since the vehicle last passed a station. This is compared with stored values of the distances between successive stations in order to determine the exact position of the vehicle. Each time the vehicle passes a station the distance counter is reset to zero. The number of stations passed is also recorded, and this is compared with the number known to form the vehicle route. When the journey has been completed, the count is reset to zero. An audio or visual warning indicates to passengers the position of the vehicle in relation to stations.
