Combustion chamber for the gasification of carboniferous material contg. a high proportion of volatile materials and water employs an inverted cone through which solids and combustion air and gases flow downwards. Prim. air is injected radially to form a drying and distn. zone for removal of water and volatiles which are carried into a central combustion zone where they burn in injected secondary air. Gasification occurs beneath the combustion zone as hot gases pass towards the radial gas outlet. Used in the gasification of wood and waste vegetable matter for automotive and industrial applications, the device produces gas having a low tar content.
