Compatibility of polar additives with paraffinic lubricating oil - increased by adding minor conc. of hydrocarbyl-substd. phenol

A lubricating oil compsn. is based on an oil contg. at least 30 wt% paraffinic hydrocarbons, and contains minor amts. of one or more polar additives for property improvement. In order to improve the compatibility of the additives, the compsn. also contains a minor amt. of at least one pheol, RC6H4OH, where R is 6-24C hydrocarbyl. The substd. pheol, is esp. useful in hydrocracked lubricating oils. The polar additives thus solubilised are e.g. dispersants, viscosity index improviers, pour point improvers and E.P. additives.
