Aerogel is made by suspending particles of carbon black, which are capable of agglomerating together without a binder, in a liq. (I). The liq. is then removed under hypercritical conditions to leave the aerogel. The suspension is pref. placed in a closed vessel with a porous wall through which liq.(I) is removed leaving a homogeneous, self-supporting block of the aerogel or "aerocarbon". The suspension may also be used to impregnate a porous material, followed by removing liq.(I) under hypercritical conditions so the material is impregnated with "aerocarbon". The porous material is pref. a foam, polycrystalline graphite, or a fibrous substrate. The aerogel obtd. is completely homogeneous, and may be impregnated.
