A spade type electrical connector has a metal pressing (5) as a socket that provides secure retention of a spade element (7). The socket is produced as a one-piece element that is pressed and then shaped in subsequent forming operations. The element has a back plate section with two side strips (6) that make contact with one side of the spade. Spring elements (13a) are formed during a folding operation and second spring elements (19) are provided. The use of a double spring clip element provides a greater retention force to hold the spade in position. A number of configurations are possible for the spring clip profile.
