The barbed-wire uses a single wire (1) with wound-on barbs (2) of which the number of turns and the axial length (L) are specified. The axial fixing of individual barbs is contrived by winding them onto projections (5) formed on the wire, the axial interval (d) between projections being less than the barb length (P). In this manner the engagement of a projection by a barb is ensured. The projections may be positioned in axial rows, in two diametrically opposed rows, in two diametrically opposed staggered rows, or in two diametrically opposed rows with different centre to centre spacings. The wire may have an elliptical cross section, with the projections on the sides of greater radius and with score lines on the other sides, the projections being inclined to align with the barb windings.
