The procedure involves two weighing operations. In the first operation a solid (5) is placed on the platform (4) of an electronic balance (2) and its weight P, read from the scale (3). In the second operation the apparent weight P2 of the solid is determined by placing it on the platform (14) of another electronic balance (12), immersed in a dielectric liquid (7) of density d, contained in a vessel (6), the solid being entirely immersed in the liquid. The dielectric liquid is a fluorocarbon maintained at constant temp. The volume of the solid : (P1-P2)/d, and the density of the solid P1d1/(P1-P2) may be calculated directly from the readings, or by transmission of the readings to a memory controlled by a microprocessor which performs the calculation and may also control an automatically advancing chain of solids arriving at the weighing apparatus.
