Crutcher slurries for detergent base mfr. - contg. citrate and magnesium ion to prevent premature gelation

In the prepn. of a crutcher slurry contg. 40-70% solids and 60-30% water, of which the solids comprise 55-85% sodium bicarbonate, 5-25% sodium carbonate and 5-25% sodium silicate of Na2O:SiO2 ratio 1:1.4 to 1:3, the ratios of the components being bicarbonate:carbonate 2:1-8:1, carbonate:silicate 1:3-3:1, and bicarbonate:silicate 2:1-10:1, gelation is retarded or prevented by inclusion of 0.1-2% citric acid or a water soluble citrate, and 0.1-1.4% magnesium sulphate, the combination forming at least 0.4% of the mixt. Alternatively, 0.3-3% of Mg citrate or Mg acid citrate may be added. The slurry is used to prepare base beads for use in nonionic surfactant detergent compsns. The citrate and Mg prevent premature gelation and setting, giving time for mixing and spray-drying. More concentrated slurries may be prepd. reducing drying costs.
