Polyethylene glycol cpds. with alkylene oxides and glycidyl ether(s) - thickeners used to increase the viscosity of surfactant solns., are esp. useful in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals for local application
Polyethylene-glycol derivs. of formula HO-(CHR-CH2-O)x (CH2-CH2-O)n (CH2-CHR-O)yH (I) are new. In (I) R is an alkyl and/or alkoxymethyl and/or alkenyloxymethyl radical or mixt. of radicals n is the mean repeat factor of 20-500, pref. 30-200 and x, y are mean repeat factors of 0-8, such that x+y is 1-8, pref. 2-8, esp. 2-6. Pref. the R alkyl gps. are 8-18C linear radicals and the alkoxymethyl and/or alkenyloxymethyl gps. have 8-20C atoms in the alkyl or alkenyl gp. Pref. the oxyethylene radicals form 70-95 wt.% of the total prod.. Thickeners, which increase the viscosity of soln. of ionic and non-ionic surfactants. Since (I) are non-ionic they are compatible with other ionic constituents of formulations. They are chemically stable and allow constant viscosities to be obtd. as a function of time, at room temp. or above. They are esp. useful in cosmetics.
