Continuous casting plant, esp. for copper alloys. The plant includes a graphite mould made of two or more parts, which are pressed against cooling elements by mechanical force exerted e.g. by jacks. The force creates flexure in the parts of the mould, so they maintain close contact with the cooling elements; i.e. so the rate of heat extn. from the mould is increased. A pref. plant is used for horizontal continuous casting, where the mould cavity is formed by two graphite elements. Jacks are used to exert compressive stress on both ends of both elements so the latter flex or bow outwards, thus making excellent contact with the cooling elements. The cooling elements may contain slots next to the graphite mould, the slots contg. a heat transfer fluid. Improved heat transfer to the cooling elements means that casting speeds can be increased.
