When a sensor (7) detects that the temp. has fallen below zero, the panel automatically lights up yellow with the zig-zag line (4) on the panel being made to flash red. Below the panel is a box (3) housing the battery for the light, with the temp. sensor being suspended in the post as near as possible to the ground. When the sign is not required for ice warning, an additional cover may be fitted over it to display a 'sharp bend' or 'roadworks' sign. A small cover at the base of the post may offer protection to the ice sensor, protecting it from possible snow. The sensor (7) is placed behind a grille, as close to the ground as possible.
