Bladder emptying catheter with balloon - has cord around balloon bending tip downwards on inflation

The urinary catheter has a rounded tip with two apertures (Lb) on opposite sides, connected to the lengthwise drainage passage. The balloon is inflated by introducing a liquid via a separate passage. A cord is inserted round the balloon (Lc), to move when the latter is inflated and cause the tip (La) of the catheter to bend downwards. The manner in which the cord is inserted round the balloon can be used to determine the way in which the tip bends. It can be arranged to do so through between 10 and 90 degrees, depending on the quantity of inflating liquid delivered into the balloon.
