Telecommunications equipment rack with component cooling system - is partic. applicable to optical communication laser diode cooling and confines cooled space in narrow vertical channels
The component cooling system is intended for optical communication source devices such as laser diodes where individual device cooling is not practicable. Printed circuit cards (7) holding the laser diode (9) are mounted vertically in a rack cabinet with the diode, and its individual heat-sink (10) located towards the rear of the compartment. Rectangular channels (15) run vertically up the back of this cabinet and are positioned so that the end sections of the circuit cards project through the opened side. Flexible rubber flaps (16,17) or, alternatively abutting sealing glands, create a partition enclosing the end of the cards in a rectangular cavity (20). The cavity is cooled by a system of vertical refrigerator heat-exchanger pipes (25) running up and down the vertical side walls of the channel. The pipes carry a conventional refrigerating fluid and are connected to a condenser unit located at the bottom of the equipment cabinet. The cooling is confined to the narrow vertical channels containing the critical components. Horizontal shelves (5) divide the cabinet into a number of rack bays and have rectangular recesses which are occupied by the channels.
