The retractable barrier for preventing cars from passing down a road comprises a tubular post (20) housing a pivoting lever (12) which cooperates with a lock (18) at one end and contains a recess (14) at the other. The post pivots about a horizontal axis (6) on a fixed base (3) which incorporates a hoop (8). When deployed, the recess engages over the hoop to hold the post in a vertical position. A ramp (9) extends from the hoop and holds the lever (12) so that the key cannot be removed when the post is folded down horizontally and not in use.
