The brushless exciter for a rotating field synchronous generator uses an alternating current exciter mounted directly on the end of the machine shaft and comprising an armature (1) made up from two three phase windings (U1,V1,W1;U2,V2,W2) which generate a hexaphase voltage and a half-wave rectifier (2) bank (4A-4F) converting the hexaphase current to direct current which is supplied to the field coils of the a.c. generator. The rectifier is connected in a hexaphase double star configuration with the DC current from the rectifier injected into the centre of the field winding group, returning from opposite ends of the field winding group to the star point of the two three phase windings in the exciter generator (1).
