Dynamic clarifier appts. comprises a cylindrical vessel with an inlet for a water stream to be clarified, and a discharge for clarified liq. A moving clarifier bed is placed within the vessel. In parts it provides a compacted zone through which the liq. being clarified passes downwardly enhancing the compaction. A concentric wall within the vessel defines an annular re- circulation path. The most dirty part of the compacted bed is directed into the bottom of the annulus. The circulation is provided at least in part by an aerator located near the bottom of the annulus. Portions of the moving bed within the annulus are returned to the top of the compacted bed after cleaning. Appts. may be used to clarify a waste stream or turbid stream prior to its consumption or use in a power plant, factory or waterworks. There are no moving parts subject ot wear. The sludge produced is easily dewatered. The appts. requires only 10-15% of the ground area required by a conventional clarifier.
