A transmitter unit contains a power supply comprising a battery and charger assembly and which powers an electronic control circuit. The control circuit comprises a signal generator providing a frequency modulated signal. A potentiometer allows the output amplitude to be adjusted for transmission along the wires being located. A receiver unit contains a circuit which recognises the transmitted signal when the receiver is connected to the wires by probe contacts or by magnetic probe coupling. A potentiometer allows the received signal amplitude to be adjusted. This amplitude is indicated by the output brilliance of a lamp. Flashing lamps indicate proximity to the wires being located.
