Profiled tray pack for storage of fruit, etc. - moulded from dry cellulosic pulp in cold pressing operation

A moulded tray-pack of cellulosic fibre for the storage and transport of fruit, vegetables, etc. is manufactured from a pulp having a moisture content of less than 50%. The pulp is built up to the required thickness in several layers, in between which a bonding agent is sprayed, then cold-pressed between moulding dies under a low pressure of approx. 1 bar to form a profiled tray. The raw material may be derived from sheets of chemical or mechanical cellulose pulp, recycled card or paper, or other cellulose-based material in suitable form. It is conditioned to a moisture content of 30-50%, then shredded and finely divided in a single operation in a mill having rotating wire-clothed cylinders. This is a simple, inexpensive process producing a strong tray which helps to preserve the fruit, etc. in good condition.
