Apparatus for inspecting the operation of non-destructive testing installations and instruments using ultrasonic, eddy current or stray flux methods with connections for probes (6) comprises a programmable central unit and testing units (2) for generating testing signals, which testing units are operable to prepare the testing installation (4) for use and also to reproduce the signals which are carried from the probes (6) to the testing installation, for receiving signals from the testing installations. The testing units (2, 3) are directly connected with the central unit (1) which communicates with the units (2, 3) via a BUS-system (e.g. IEEE 488).
