PURPOSE:To improve a measuring precision, by a method wherein, in case a Ko value, showing an anisotropic stress condition of earth, is found, a sample is inserted into a condolidation ring, made of a rigid material, which is equipped with a pressure converter at the side wall thereof, and a pressure in an axial direction is applied through porous plates. CONSTITUTION:A Ko consolidation ring 11 is provided with a ring part 12, which has a sufficient rigidity against an extected horizontal stress, and a pressure converter 13, which is attached to the side wall of the ring part 12 and measures a stress in a direction of a ring diameter, and the converter 13 is mounted through a packing 15 to fill the pressure receiving surface with a silicon rubber 17. The ring 11 is supported to a fastening table 30, and an upper and a lower surface of a sample 24 are positioned between the nip formed by porous plates 31a and 31b to support the sample on a lower load cell attachment 33 on a power meter 32 for friction measurement. A pressure is applied to the porous plate 31a through a power meter 43 for measuring a vertical stress by an air cylinder 40 to apply a load to the upper and the lower surface of the sample 24. A Ko value is determined from the outputs of the power meter 43 and the converter 13. This permits the improvement of a testing precision and enables obtaining of a consolidation ring for test use.
