PURPOSE:To form a desired cat's-eye in a ruby crystal by growing an inclusion in a ruby crystal by an F.Z method with the use of a prescribed sintered compact consisting essentially of Al2O3 and controlling the growth rate of the crystal. CONSTITUTION:About 0.3-3wt% Cr2O3 is mixed with raw Al2O3 and the mixture is pulverized. Approximately 40vol% desired organic substance, low m.p. metal, sublimable substance and non-metal are incorporated with the above pulverized mixture, and the resulting mixture is ground for many hours. Then a sintered rod 1 is prepared from the mixed powder by the prescribed F.Z method for manufacturing a raw material rod, and the rod together with a seed crystal 2 is set in a quartz tube 6 in an F.Z furnace. The rod 1 and the crystal 2 are joined with a halogen lamp 5 as a heat source by rotating an upper and a lower shafts in the same direction. The rods 9 and 10 are moved up and down at a moving rate of 4mm. per hour by making said rate coincide with the growth rate of the crystal. An inclusion having several mum diameter is grown in the growth direction of a ruby crystal. Thus, the desired ruby cat's-eye is synthesized.
