PURPOSE:To obtain an extracting reagent undergoing a slight increase in the kinematic viscosity and having a high coefft. of extraction and separation by specifying the kinds of alkyl groups in an extracting reagent made of monoalkyl ester of alkylphosphonic acid represented by a specified general formula. CONSTITUTION:This extracting reagent for extracting and separating Ni and Co is a compound represented by the formula (where R1 is 4C alkyl, and R2 is 8C alkyl). When the extracting reagent is used to extract Co from a soln. contg. Ni and Co, the reagent undergoes a slight increase in the kinematic viscosity even in case where much Co is held in an org. solvent, and smooth operation can be carried out. Since the reagent has a very high coefft. of extraction and separation of Ni and Co, high purity Ni and Co are easily obtd.
