PURPOSE:To attain to enhance cryogenic temp., characteristics at a liquefied He temp., by containing C, Si, Mn, Ni, Cr, N, Fe and V in a predetermined ratio. CONSTITUTION:Steel consisting of, on the basis of wt%, 0.01-0.1% C, 0.3-1% Si, 0.5-2% Mn, 6-20% Ni, 14-26% Cr, 0.05-0.3% N and the remainder Fe and containing 0.2% or more V satisfying formula (A-1.5)%=V=(A+0.5%) [wherein A is 0.05Cr(%)+4(C+N)(%)] and one kind or more additional Mo, Ti and Nb is prepared by a melting method. This austenite type stainless steel is formed into a lump which is in turn subjected to hot and cold rollings and annealing. This steel is excellent in cryogenic temp. characteristics at a liquefied He temp.
