PURPOSE:To prepare a graphitized product having high quality in high electrical power efficiency, in the resistance-heating graphitization of formed carbonaceous articles, by measuring the resistance of the graphitization furnace during the graphitization process, and controlling the electrical power supply according to the measured value. CONSTITUTION:A plurality of the formed carbonaceous articles 4 are made to contact with each other and placed in the graphitization furnace 3. Coke powder, etc. is filled between the article and the furnace wall. The row of the formed carbonaceous articles 4 is electrified with the electrical source 1, and the article is heated at a high temperature by the Joule heat to effect the graphitization of the carbon in the formed article 4. In the above process, the change in the electrical resistance of the row according to the progress of the graphitization is measured by the furnace resistance detector 7. The movable electrode 5 in the electrode pair 2, 5 pressing the row of the formed carbonaceous articles 4 at both ends is shifted by the pressing apparatus 6 according to the measured resistance value to control the furnace resistance automatically at an optimum level. A graphitized product free from the deterioration or breakage caused by inadequate power supply can be prepared by this process in high electrical power efficiency.
