DIRECT LIQUEFACTION OF COAL USING IRON SULFIDE COLLOID AS CATALYST

PURPOSE:To efficiently liquefy coal directly with a small amt. of a catalyst by the treatment of crushed coal with a quat. ammonium salt surfactant, followed by the adsorption of a colloidal particle of iron sulfide catalyst on the coal surface, and then heating in pressurized hydrogen. CONSTITUTION:Crushed coal is agitated together with an aq. soln. of a quart. ammonium salt surfactant such as dodecyltrimethyl-ammonium chloride, and then filtered. An iron sulfide hydrosol obtd. by mixing an aq. soln. of sodium sulfide with an aq. soln. of an iron salt with agitation is contacted with the surfactant-treated coal in an oxygen-free atmosphere, to effect adsorption of a colloidal iron sulfide particle on the surface of the crushed coal. Then the crushed coal which has adsorbed the colloidal particle is charged in a autoclave, and directly liquefied by pressurization with hydrogen at an initial to pressure of about 70-150kg/cm2 and heating to about 400-450 deg.C.
