PURPOSE:To control and the quantity of light transmitted into magnetic fluid and to plan bistability by controlling and changing field strength when polarized light passes through the magnetic fluid. CONSTITUTION:A polarizer 2, a phase plate 3 if necessary, the magnetic fluid 4 into which light can transmit, and an analyser 5 are arranged vertically to the optical axis 1 of incident light with a fixed interval and these parts are sealed in an external box inhibiting the transmission of light to form a united polarization system. The magnetic fluid 4 is provided with a magnetic field generating pary 6 to apply magnetic field variable its strength to the optical axis 1 in the vertical magnetic field. In the generating part 6, the magnetic fluid is put between a pair of electromagnets 7, and a switch 9, a variable resistor 10, an alternation switch 11, an AC power supply 12, and a DC power supply 13 are connected to a coil 8 wound around the electromagnets 7. The quantity of current flowing into the electromagnets 7 is changed so that the field strength applied to the magnetic fluid can be changed. When incident light itself is polarized light, the polarizer 2 is unnecessary.
