PURPOSE:To analyze qualitatively and quantitatively various catechols with a high sensitivity, by treating a material to be analyzed with 2-cyanoacetamide, and determining the fluorescencd from the reaction product of catechols with 2-cyanoacetamide. CONSTITUTION:After pretreatments such as the removal of impurities, etc., a sample containing catechols is incorporated with a mixture of an aqueous solution of 2-cyanoacetamide with a phosphoric acid buffer solution to produce fluorescent substances. The intensity of fluorescent is determined by irradiating ultraviolet rays to the resulting fluorescent substance. In addition, the analysis of individual catechol compounds is quantitatively conducted by selecting the maximal exitation wavelength and the maximal wavelength of fluorescene for individual catechols, respectively, and measuring the intensity of fluorescence.
