It is often necessary to identify articles or packages in large numbers for sorting or subsequent processing so as to pass them to the appropriate point or to the further processing point. For this purpose reading devices are used to detect printed characters on the article as it is passed on a conveyor through the lens field of a detecting camera, whereby a printed character consisting of dots and situated in the lens field of the detecting camera is detected and converted into signals for controlling the subsequent routing of the article.
