A process for the preparation of yellow to violet azo-N-substituted homophthalimide disperse dyes for application to synthetic fibres and of formula II.comprising coupling diazotised aromatic amine of formula R-N=N-C1 with N-substituted homophthalimide of formula I.in aqueous alkaline solutions and separating the precipitated dyestuff wherein isopropyl, p-cyanoethyl or phenyl radicaland R is phenyl, 2-methoxy phenyl, 2-chlorophenyl, 4-nitro-phenyl, 2, 5-dichlorophenyl, 4-methoxy-2-nitro-phenyl, 2, 4-dinitrophenyl, 2 5-dimethoxy phenyl, 4-phenylazo-phenyl, 4-diethyl-aminophenyl, 4-(N-(ethyl)N-(p-cyanoethyl) )-phenyl or 2-methoxy-4-diethylaminophenyl radical.
