Phenol cpds. prodn. by gas phase oxidn. of benzoic acid derivs. - using copper contg. catalyst with vanadium, silver, lithium or magnesium cpds. and tellurium co:catalyst
A process for prodn. of (un)substd. phenol cpds. (I) by oxidn. of the corresponding benzoic acid cpd. (II) in the gas phase in the presence of a catalyst comprising copper and/or one or more Cu cpds., vanadium and/or one or more V cpds., and/or silver and/or one or more Ag cpds. and/or sodium and/or one or more Na cpds. and/ or magnesium and/or one or more Mg cpds., with an atomic ratio V/Cu of at most 1:2, Ag/Cu of at most 1:2, Li/Cu of at most 5:1, Na/Cu of at most 5:1 and Mg/Cu of at most 5:1, together with tellurium and/or one or more Te cpds. as cocatalyst with an atomic ratio Te/Cu of at most 1:10, and esp. 1:1000-1:10. The catalyst may comprise 0-95 wt.%, esp. 20-80 wt.% of a pref. silica-contg. carrier. The oxidn. is carried out pref. with a loading of 0.05-5, esp. 0.1-2 pts.wt. (II) per pt. wt. catalyst per hour and at a temp. of 450-700, esp. 500-650 K and a press. of 50-2000 kPa. Presence of the Te cocatalyst gives considerable increase in conversion of (II) to the required phenol cpd. (I) compared to the use of the catalyst component only as described in EP application 40452.
