The mattress comprises a slab (1) of foam material, such as foam rubber of polyether contained in an envelope of ticking cloth, which may be padded. The slab is provided with a transverse groove (2) its surface which extends over at least part of its width and defines a head portion (3) and a body portion (4). The ticking follows the inner contours of this groove. The opposite surface may be provided with a similar groove (5) to permit reversing the mattress.
