The device, is fitted inside the safe, is contained in a metal case, one face of which is perforated to allow the smoke to escape. The explosives used by the criminal to open the safe generate sufficient heat to ignite fast-burning material (21) which surrounds one end of the charge package (22). The charge is a folded plastics material sleeve containing slow-burning material. The material can be sheets of paper or textile impregnated with chemicals which produce dense clouds of smoke when ignited.
