The map, which may be made of plastics sheet or plasticised paper, linen, etc. is rolled around a roller inside a cylindrical housing. The roller has two internal spring assemblies: a torsion return spring and a braking segment. When the map is drawn out through a slit by pulling a ring on the lower edging strip, the braking tension exceeds the torsion, so the map stays out. If the map is drawn out to its greatest extent, torsion overcomes braking and it is drawn back into the holder. The map may have side flaps, which can be folded out, by peeling apart magnetic or hook and pile fastener strips. The map may be painted in phosphorescent ink for night use.
