Stabilising aq. chlorite soln. used as biocide - for skin treatment and swimming pool water purificn. by adding chlorite to aq. peroxide soln. until alkaline
A stabilised, modified aq. chlorite soln. (I) contg. a peroxy cpd. (II) is prepd. by dosing a chlorite (III) into an aq. soln. of (II), which is stable in this soln., until the soln. has a pH over 7. (II) is H2O2, a persulphate, precarbonate, perborate of alkali or alkaline earth peroxide and is used in an amt. giving a 0.001-0.01 M soln. (III) is an alkali and/or alkaline earth chlorite. The original aq. soln. contains a weak acid and has a pH of max. 1. If the water used has low carbonate hardness, prodn. is carried out under an inert gas atmos. A water-soluble phosphate pref. is added.
