Telephone jacks (A,B,C) are used to connect telephone units to the modems, with a device (D) reducing to an acceptable level transients on charge metering impulses from telephone stations of the older type. Two two-way change-over switches (E,F) change between telephone and data transmission and reception positions, with telephone plugs (G,H) connecting the telephone subscribers to be considered for reserve connection. One jack (C) is provided for connection to a modem, and the other two jacks (A,B) connect the two telephones in normal usage. - A mobile back-up unit is required at each end of the connection to be maintained, connection being made to the circuit by lines provided with plugs. Both telephones are connected to the two jack outlets on the back-up units. The modem is then connected to the jacks on the top side of the unit.
