A process for the preparation of binders, which can be diluted with water after full or partial neutralisation with inorganic and/or organic acids, for cathodic electrocoatings by reacting at least 50 mol-% of the epoxide groups of a resinous compound containing at least two 1,2-epoxide groups per molecule and having an epoxide equivalent of at least 160, with monoesters of aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic dicarboxylic acids and substituted hydroxyalkyloxazolidines. The use of these substituted oxazolidine monoesters gives products having significantly improved properties, in particular with respect to the formation of a defect-free film surface of the baked films.
