Process comprises mixing at pH 1.2-1.6, ferric chloride and alkali carbonate solns., and then e.g. dextran soln. Mixt. is neutralised with alkali soln. to pH 2-2.2, and then 4-4.5. - Dextran polymer gel microsphere columns exclude the free hydrocarbon and the complex, and the complex only, respectively, based on the gel pore sizes.
