A process for the preparation of a solution for pharmaceutical use of an electroneutral, polynuclear iron (III) complex comprising dissolving in acetic acid freshly precipitated iron (III) hydroxide, washed anion- free reacting iron (III) acetate thus obtained either with 0.25 to 0.5 equivalents of a sugar acid and 0.25 to 0.5 equivalents of dextran, or with 0.5 to 1.0 equivalents of a sugar acid removing the acetic acid thus formed by steam distillation, steam distillation being continued until the solution has a pH of 4.5 to 5.0 adjusting the iron concentration, where necessary, to the required figure by vacuum distillation and, if desired, sterilizing the solution and/or adding additives and/or adjuvants. The sugar acid is preferably lactobionic acid, gluconic acid or maltobionic acid.
