The invention relates to a method for operating a nuclear reactor by moving control rods through the core of this reactor. When the driving parameter (.DELTA.T) is in its dead band, a correction of the axial power deviation (DA) is effected by displacement of at least one group of control bars, when DA is outside of a predetermined interval or dead band surrounding a reference value DA ref. The group moved is chosen according to the sign of .DELTA.T, the position of .DELTA.T relative to its dead band and the position of the other groups. When .DELTA.T is outside its dead band, the differences between the amplitudes of insertion of the groups participating in the operation of the reactor are varied by stopping or starting selected groups according to the position of the groups of bars in the reactor core and the position of DA either with respect to its dead band, if DA is outside this dead band, or with respect to DA ref, if DA is inside this dead band. The invention applies, in particular, to pressurized water nuclear reactors.
